Comment by texaswishbonet 1 review 1 favorite business I read in the December 2, 2006 edition of the "Austin American-Statesman" that Pecan Grove RV Park, a long-time South Austin tradition and relic of Old Austin culture, is to be torn down and redeveloped for high-end condos.
Susan Toomey Frost is the current owner of that property due to her family trust inherited from here grandfather, the original owner of the prime real estate that Pecan Grove RV Park is situated on since the 1940s. This is my direct appeal to Ms. Toomey-Frost:
I cannot believe that you finally sold out to anti-Keep Austin Weird developers Perry Lorenz & Warshaw. Remember when we both worked on the 1987 Mike McCone for Austin City Council campaign against incumbent George Humphrey? We painted George as the anti-environmental, pro-development councilmember? Well, Peck Young, George's campaign consultant was right all along...you and McHone were the pro-development types in sheep's clothing. In my opinion, McHone has displaced residents and leveled old classic West Campus neighborhoods with his condo developments in the last decade and now you are cashing-in on a prime piece of real estate that your family trust should donate fee-simple title to the Austin Parks and Rec Dept for green space...not make a buck off of old Austin traditions.
Why don't you just make a high-rise condo project on your hill-top Travis Heights historical manor...the view of the city is even better from your roof-top terrazzo-stone terrace and it is just another piece of real estate after all.
I get the economics - the land Pecan Grove RV stands on alone is worth 10s of millions of dollars I know - due to its hyper-preferred central location at the confluence of Barton Creek & Town Lake and Zilker Park...not to mention downtown, warehouse district live music clubs, the hike & bike trail, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, Whole Foods mega-store, uber-hip 78704 zip code neighbors, eclectic South Lamar and South Congress shops and the fine Hill Country cuisine at Barton Springs Road eateries.
Susan, what would your grandfather think of you? What would John Henry Faulk and J. Frank Dobie do if in your place? I ask you to FIGHT BACK! Do not allow the money-grubbing Republican wanna-be white men who want to pave over the last bastions of greens cape and old Austin tradition make Pecan Grove RV Park yet another impervious-covered yuppie scumbag den of inequity!
