UNCLEAN AND UNPROFESSIONAL: I recently found a large, black, crunchy bug in our pizza from Saccone’s; wings, legs, and all. We returned it, expecting a refund and a simple apology. (We were not pleased, but we were polite.) However, owner Daniel Saccone was immediately confrontational and belligerent. He rudely stated that he would give us “some free stuff if you want,” and that “the health department comes all the time and we don’t have a problem here.” (In fact, the City of Austin Health Department’s routine inspections occur twice yearly, and Saccone’s posted ratings have never been lower.) Unbelievably, he went on to argue that he is simply not accountable for his “fresh” produce, which, upon questioning, he admitted is delivered precut and is not even visually inspected before use. My husband politely pointed out that any restaurant is responsible for what is in their food, regardless. Saccone angrily replied that he is experienced and successful and “That’s why I work for myself and you work for someone else.” He actually approached my husband, clearly inviting a physical response. As we left, he sarcastically told us to let him know if there was anything else he could do to help. (Of course, this was not a busy hour and there was no need for forced pleasantries for the benefit of other customers.) We walked into Saccone’s as once longtime customers with a problem that any professional and conscientious business owner would have been more than happy to address, yet were treated with childish petulance and left with the clear understanding that our business is of no more matter than bugs in their food are. We had to specifically request our refund (it was not offered) and we were intentionally not given an apology. Saccone’s is extremely unprofessional and unhygienic, and is not a proud example of business ownership in Austin or anywhere else. (July 30th 2006)
