I'd like to reply to jessywests complaint about Terry Sayther Automotive: First of all, we do NOT give quotes for anything at all, not ever, never. We have had enough experience with these cars to know that there will often be surprises. For this reason, we give our customers ballpark estimates for any work being performed. In the case of this car, we encountered a leaking coolant hose that would've soon emptied the coolant system, causing conditions that could ruin the engine block or cylinder head. Our decision was to replace this hose as a preventative measure. We did this without authorization. We freely admit this and we have apologized to the ex-customer for thinking that they would want to pay for such a measure. This person then arranged to pick the car up after-hours and pay with a credit card number over the phone. Had they picked up the car while we were here, we would, of course, have explained the price increase. After the customers picked up the car and saw the receipt, they called our phone recorder and left messages indicating concern about the extra charges. We returned their call in the morning and apologized for the surprise, explaining that they needed an extra hose and some labor. They then called back and told us that they knew that we were trying to squeeze extra cash out of them. We are almost always busy here, and as a general rule our customers trust us to make minor decisions like this. We don't like to work for people who do not trust us, and we will not work for those who want to accuse us of stealing/ making things up. We immediately, and happily credited this person $100 after he contacted us via phone. This customers immediate complaint to our Rate Austin listing is proof that we made the right decision in terminating our relationship. They got an apology, they got their money back, and now they get to find somebody else with whom to build a trusting relationship. (05 Dec 07)

These guys have always been fair to me. They are BMW purists. Not only do they work on BMWs, but they own and take care of them for themselves. (12 Oct 06)

Well, I just had a terrible experience with Terry Sayther, himself, and thought I'd take a look online to research his/the shop's reputation. I'm sure hataska (might this be Terry himself??) will call this a smear but, not only did Terry try to rip me off, he was personally offensive. I trusted Terry and his employees well enough to call them first with a car problem and to have my car towed directly to his shop (via their recommended tow company). I was quoted $290 for parts and labor on Friday. I was called back on Monday (not before) to come pick it up. I gave Terry my credit card on which to charge the parts/labor fee and arranged for after-hours pick-up. Upon picking up my car, I opened my receipt and realized I had been charged $385.85 without any notice whatsoever. I called immediately and left a message stating the estimate and asking for a return phone call to explain the additional charges. An employee called with an apology for the "surprise charge." Are you kidding? My husband called this morning for further explanation - and only an explanation. Terry told him he didn't want to deal with anyone who couldn't accept surprise charges, that it's the nature of the car business, and that my husband only wanted to be "right." My husband explained this is the first time he's ever dealt with Terry's shop, since we just got married, and Terry told my husband he didn't want our business in the future. Wow. What an attitude. We don't need him, he needs US! Good riddance, I say. I'm happy to see he uses the dealership's method of estimating charges. Looks like I'll be returning to the dealership for work. At least they'll give me a phone call if they notice $100 worth of more work to charge me for. (04 Dec 07)
